A small SBC meet-up
Was supposed to just lounge at home today, something I was absolutely looking forward to. But mid-afternoon, I finally open my IG to see a message from a friend at Silent Book Club-Manila. She was inviting me to a silent reading session with a small group of SBC members Iād been with before. Plus side was that it was quite near where I lived.
I was actually surprised by how quickly I said yes. I mean, I couldāve just read silently at home, which was my plan for the day, but I suppose Iām still really into book groups and socializing with fellow readers.
But I think I like to do it on my terms, being somewhat selective. I mean, there are A LOT of reader events in Manila nowāa great thing, tbh. But I remember a time when there werenāt that many, so I could make it a point to know and go to most of them. I donāt think thatās feasible now.
Also, in these situations, I fall back on saying Iām old. Which I am, kind of. I canāt do everything anymore andā¦I donāt want to. Or perhaps more to the point, I donāt need to. Many others will do the things that need to be done for reading advocacy. I take joy in watching what people come up with (speaking as someone who used to come up with reading events some years ago).
I also take joy mostly in just settling down with a book, either alone or with other people. Spent the afternoon reading (and chatting!) with the group, and then when the cafe closed, went back home to read some more. This, frankly, is my preferred kind of weekend.
