Reading slow: THE GREAT DIVIDE

I told a friend I felt like I’d been living life more on the surface the past couple of weeks. It’s mostly because of work and my other responsibilities. Funnily, this month was supposed to be a light month since I don’t have to go anywhere, but I’m not sure why it isn’t. Did I overbook my social calendar?

I told myself I’d read slower, because I felt a bit of pressure to read more so that I can add more money to my reading pot (have I talked about my reading pot?). All that’s done, though, is make me play more games and, alas, doomscroll more.

So, I’m going to try to get back into doing nothing else with my spare time except read.

Still reading THE GREAT DIVIDE by Cristina Henriquez, ye of the lovely cover. Truly enjoying it, so much so I don’t mind reading it slow. But then I want to know what happens next. But also!…it’s character study after character study that I think is building towards the point where all these characters are going to be important to each other somehow. So far, I think I’ve been introduced to 9 of them. And each one is fascinating. Am seriously invested in each of them, which I think is quite a feat for a writer.

I keep thinking why, when most of the characters are supposed to be regular people with small lives, but all lives are interesting, have depth and story, I suppose. None of the characters are throwaways, which I guess is how we have to view people. Even if we occasionally disagree with the sentiment.

Anyway, I think the rest of this week is going to be a bit busy again, until next, but I hope to finish The Great Divide soon. And maybe put down my fricking phone more often.
